Gannet is made by Gannet Pacific Limited, a New Zealand company. This page explains what the app collects, where it goes, and how to get rid of it. We have tried to write it in plain language rather than legal boilerplate.
The short version
Your fishing data lives on your phone. It leaves the device only if you sign in to sync it, use an AI feature, or opt in to analytics — and when the app fetches weather and maps for the area you are looking at. We do not sell your data, and analytics are off until you say yes.
What stays on your phone
By default everything you create in Gannet is stored on your device: your trip and catch logs, saved spots and waypoints, vessel profile, gear lists, settings and any catch photos you add. None of it is uploaded unless you sign in.
Your account and cloud sync
If you create an account and sign in, Gannet syncs your data so you can move between devices without losing your history. That covers your trip and catch logs, saved spots and waypoints, vessel profile, gear lists, catch photos, and your app settings — which include your home location, your emergency contact's phone number, the location used for notifications, and any species or season changes you make. It is stored with Supabase, our database and storage provider. If you never sign in, none of this is uploaded.
Location
Gannet uses your location only while the app is open, to show nearby spots, tides and conditions and to place your own marks. It does not track you in the background. To show weather, tides and maps, the app sends the coordinates of the area you are viewing to the data providers listed below — without your name, email or account. If you build a trip from photos, Gannet reads the date and location stored in those photos. Your location is never sold or sent to advertisers.
AI features
AI features need you to be signed in. When you use one, your request and the context needed to answer it are sent through our own servers (run on Cloudflare and Supabase) to Anthropic, which provides the AI model. Depending on the feature, that context can include a spot's location, your home location, the conditions, the species involved, your trip history, and any catch photo you submit for identification. If you never use an AI feature, none of this is sent.
Camera, photos, microphone and contacts
The camera and photo library are used for catch photos you choose to add. A catch photo can be sent to our AI provider if you ask Gannet to identify the fish. The microphone is used only when you record a spoken trip description; it is transcribed by Apple's speech recognition, on your device where supported and otherwise by Apple. Contacts use Apple's own picker, so the app only receives the one contact you choose as your emergency contact.
Analytics and crash reports
Both are opt-in. When you first open Gannet you are asked, and until you answer, nothing is sent. If you opt in, we receive usage events (which features are used) through PostHog and crash reports through Sentry, both hosted in the EU. These are tied to a random identifier created on your device, not to your name or email. We do not send your location, your fishing spots, your catches or anything you type. One switch in the app under Privacy turns both on or off, at any time.

Getting your data out, or deleting it
You can export everything from inside the app — as a file including your photos, or as GPX and CSV. You can reset the app, which clears your data from the device. And you can delete your account from inside the app (Profile → Account & data → Delete my account), which removes the account and everything synced to it, including catch photos, from our servers. If you can't get into the app, email us and we will do it for you.
Your rights
Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for access to the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it, and you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. If you are in the UK or EU, the equivalent rights under the UK GDPR and GDPR apply. Ask us at the address below.
Children
Gannet is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes
If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page and change the date at the top.
